Why I hate our annual health and 360° check-ups [人事3-人材育成・グローバル人材・評価]

This is a story of one manager.

I hate our annual health and 360° check-ups (I’d rather use the word “check-up” than “survey”).  Both “check-ups” always seem to catch me off guard.

When I get the memo from the HR department notifying me of the check-ups, I feel depressed. This is because I am forced to do meaningless things like reduce the amount of beer I consume or say “Good morning” to my subordinates.

The check-ups also require me to respond to stupid questions like: “How much alcohol do you drink per day?” or “Are you communicating enough with your subordinates?”. Why do these checks-ups ask me to check myself? “They are supposed to be checking me, aren’t they?” Can I make up the answers?

Several weeks later, I receive the test results in an impersonal envelope which, on the outside, reveals nothing. Immediately, I go to the bathroom and open this benevolent envelope. And then, as always, I say, “Oh my god, there’s been NO improvement!”

My well-meaning doctor and subordinates offer me the same advice they do every year. For example, they say: “You SHOULD exercise every day.” or “You SHOULD control your temper.” I find their advice captivating. I then say, “Thank you very much for your kind suggestions. I really appreciate them.”

I am, however, an earnest worker and delivering good business result.

What’s wrong with me?

So, what do I do? Well, I put these reports into my drawer and never look at them again.

THAT’S WHY I HATE OUR ANNUAL HEALTH & 360°CHECK-UPS.
